The importance of Body Language in your Portraits

Updated: Dec 8, 2019

Body language plays a huge role in how we communicate with others. In portraiture, I feel that it's one of the most important aspects to focus on in order to convey your intended message. Whether you want a formal corporate head-shot for your LinkedIn profile, a more friendly and approachable portrait for your creative business website, a portrait for your book cover or even a dating profile photo- as your photographer I make sure to guide you into the expressions and poses that will best suit your intended use of the image.

Things like leaning towards the lens, a slight head tilt, and a slight smile can make you appear friendly, approachable and engaging. Whereas crossing your arms in certain poses, holding tension in your lips, rigid hands or wide eyes (think deer-in-the-headlights) can make you appear guarded, stand offish or simply uncomfortable.

Through mirroring and constant coaching throughout the session, I make sure that the body language in your finished portraits helps convey the feeling or message that best aligns with your brand.
